‘General Hospital’ (GH): Maurice Benard Wants A Sonny & Laura Romance – Why It Could Work!

Sure we know that Sonny Corinthos [Maurice Benard] is about to walk down the aisle (yet again) with Carly Corinthos [Laura Wright], but he may already have his eye on another romance. At least that’s what Sonny portrayer Benard is hoping. In a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest, Benard said he’d like to see Sonny in a romance with Laura Spencer [Genie Francis], so today we thought we’d take a look at what that would look like, what it would take to make it happen and how it could play out.

Minus: Sonny and Carly would need to split up first

It’s true that Sonny and Carly need to break up first but, let’s be realistic, they are going to split up anyway. Carly and Sonny are the most volatile couple in Port Charles and they’ve been off more than they’ve been on – so it’s just a matter of time before they’ve had enough of each other. This is not much of an obstacle, although we’d likely have to wait for the ink to dry on their latest marriage certificate before we start drafting their divorce papers!

Plus: Laura likes kids and Sonny has plenty

Both Laura and Sonny like kids and between them, they have plenty – particularly on Sonny’s part. They have grown kids and they even have grandkids, so that’s a good thing. Laura wouldn’t mind playing mom to baby Avery – and they are both family-centric and more of ‘hang around the house with the kids’ people than party people. Plus, Laura has no career and Sonny would dig a traditional stay at home type lady.

Minus: If they got married, Dante and Lulu would be icked out

As mentioned above, they both have a grandkid – problem is, it’s the same grandkid! If they ever got married, that would make the already-wed Dante Falconeri [Dominic Zamprogna] and Lulu Spencer [Emme Rylan] into step-brother and step-sister while still being spouses. That seems like retroactive, weird, step-incest. Kind of icky. But they could all adjust. Another minus for little baby Rocco is that he’d lose out on a grandparent gift if Sonny and Carly hook up.

Plus/Minus: They both have a history of mental illness

This is both a plus and a minus. Since both Laura and Sonny have struggled with mental illness, they are well-equipped to be patient and understanding if one has a relapse. But, on the down side, what if they both relapse at the same time? What a mess for baby Avery!  Hard to say which way this consideration of their relationship would go.

Plus: She knows how to look past the illegal stuff

Laura is well-versed in turning a blind eye on shady business. She would not bug Sonny about his illegal goings on and, if it ever leaked over into their household, Laura knows how to handle a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to defend herself, Sonny or baby Avery. Laura still knows how to be dangerous when she needs to be and could even help Sonny in the biz if he wanted to. In fact, Laura may have a wider knowledge base than Sonny given all her adventures with Luke Spencer [Anthony Geary].

We have to agree – Maurice Benard had a great idea proposing a romance between Sonny and Laura. It could be fun to watch and would give Sonny an age-appropriate change of pace with his romances and would shake up Port Charles with a never-before-seen coupling of fascinating legacy characters.
