'General Hospital' (GH) Interview: Maurice Benard Discusses Sonny Corinthos Storyline And Fan Club Weekend“General Hospital” star Maurice Benard sat down with Daytime Confidential and gave them the scoop about his paralyzed storyline, co-star Laura Wright, and his comments about Ron Carlivati at GHFCW a few months ago. He promised DC that no topic was off limits, and he made good on his word.

Maurice revealed that he was excited when saw the script initially. He learned he was going to be paralyzed- at least for a little while.  He said that he thought that Sonny had done everything a few times, but this was new. “This was something I have never done,” Maurice stated. “Fans will not want to miss October 22 episode; it is a great episode, “ he promised.  Maurice said that whenever he gets a new script, he tries to study and research it to make it believable on the screen. He said, “I asked Jimmy, one of the members of our crew, to come over and give me a few pointers. I was confused how my legs and knees should be positioned in the wheelchair,” he noted.

Sonny didn’t want to marry Carly until he knew for certain he would not be a burden to her. She wanted to marry him as soon as possible, and she didn’t see a point in waiting. In the end, he married her when he knew he wasn’t going to die- taking a leap of faith that he wouldn’t become a burden to her. He said he believes that Sonny belongs with Carly.

At the Fan Club Weekend several months ago, Maurice rejoiced with the fans about finally getting rid of the writer- in reference to Ron Carlivati. Fans were left confused by his change of heart. Just months earlier, he touted that Ron was a fan of his and wrote him perfectly. Maurice explained that he had no animosity towards him; it just wasn’t working for the show. “What happened at the Fan Club Weekend was basically me having too much fun for my own good. Actually when I listened to it again, I would really only take back one thing I said that night,” he explained. “I have nothing against Ron, but he was going down a different road than the viewers wanted to see,” he elaborated.

He said that he cannot wait to have more scenes with Billy Miller in the coming months. He praised new head scribes Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante for their effort to balance the show between romance and mob history. Maurice gave them a few tips to write a successful show, “ I’ll tell you how: great writing, great acting, great directing, great producing equals a great show.”
