“All My Children” alum Susan Lucci [ex-Erica Kane] has a cameo appearance as Danica in the just-released movie “Joy.” The iconic soap opera actress sat down recently to talk about the role, working with Robert De Niro and more.
“Joy” not only stars Academy Award winner De Niro, but fellow Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. In a recent exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest Susan revealed how she was cast in the role of Danica.
When asked what it was like to work with director David O. Russell, La Lucci described the experience as thrilling. It all started with a phone call in November 2014. Russell was traveling to New York and rang Susan up asking for a meeting. Susan Lucci revealed to Soap Opera Digest that everything was very hush-hush and “completely not spoken about.”
Susan recounted how she went to the director’s hotel room and spent a couple of hours talking. Then David asked Susan if she would meet someone, picked up the phone and before the “Devious Maids” star knew it, Jennifer Lawrence was in the room.
Lucci discussed a scene in “Joy” where her character is involved in a catfight with Donna Mills’ character. Susan revealed that David O. Russell is a brilliant director and everything was very much in the moment and on the spot. There really wasn’t any time to think about the catfight, let alone overthink it.
What was it like working opposite Robert De Niro? Susan divulged that she actually had butterflies in her stomach when she met the iconic actor. Those butterflies lasted for days and months! But De Niro, and Lawrence, put all the other actors at ease. It was an absolute pleasure to work with both of them.

It’s really too bad Joy or some movie couldn’t find Susan Lucci a bigger part but still great to see Susan still working. Life isn’t fair but she deserves bigger roles after all her hard work and dedication to All My Children and daytime tv. She put daytime tv on the map. She treated it and her fans with great respect. Many other soap actors or actors in general considered it a stepping stone or left daytime for night time but she stayed loyal – yes she did night time but she always admitted and stayed with AMC and daytime tv. Now she deserves her rewards. Think about it – Genie Francis, Deidre Hall and Tony Geary all tried their hands at night tie but came crawling back. Not Lucci. ABC should do something for her for all her loyalty to ABC to the bitter end of AMC!
